About the US Citizenship Test Exam

The US citizenship civics test is part of the naturalization process administered by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). During your naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will ask you up to 20 civics questions drawn from the official 128-question bank. You must correctly answer at least 12 of 20 questions (60%) to pass.

The current 128-question civics test applies to N-400 applications filed on or after October 20, 2025. The questions cover American government (the Constitution, branches of government, rights and responsibilities), American history (the colonial period through modern times), and integrated civics (geography, symbols, and holidays).

PrepTestAI helps you master all 128 official civics questions through adaptive practice, helping you identify which questions you need to study most. We include questions with multiple acceptable answers and explain the context behind each answer so you can respond confidently during your actual USCIS interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the US Citizenship Test exam:

How does the USCIS civics test work during the naturalization interview?

A USCIS officer will ask you up to 20 civics questions from the official 128-question bank during your naturalization interview. The officer will stop asking questions once you have answered 6 correctly. If you answer 6 correctly before reaching 20 questions, you pass. You must answer at least 12 of 20 correctly to pass.

What happens if I answer 6 questions correctly before being asked all 20?

If you correctly answer 6 questions, the officer will stop and you pass the civics portion. You do not need to continue answering questions. This means studying the most common questions thoroughly can help you pass quickly.

Are there any exemptions from the civics test?

Yes. Applicants who are 65 or older and have been lawful permanent residents for 20 or more years qualify for a modified civics test. They only need to study the 65 questions marked with an asterisk (*) in the official question list, and may take the test in their native language with an interpreter.

What questions have multiple acceptable answers?

Several questions accept multiple responses. For example, "Name one war fought by the United States in the 1900s" accepts World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, or the Gulf War. "What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment?" accepts speech, religion, assembly, press, or petition. Our practice questions include all acceptable answers.

How should I prepare for the English portion of the naturalization interview?

The USCIS officer will test reading (you read one of three sentences aloud), writing (you write one of three sentences the officer dictates), and speaking (evaluated throughout the interview). PrepTestAI focuses on the civics portion. For the English test, practice reading and writing simple sentences about American history and civics.

Can I fail the civics test and retake it?

Yes. If you fail the civics test at your first interview, USCIS will schedule a second interview typically 60-90 days later. At the second interview you only need to retake the portions you failed. If you fail the second time, your N-400 application may be denied and you would need to reapply.
